August 28th and 29th

Carolina’s Notes
Well the day finally was here and Tony & I were in the west side of Michigan ready to play in Holland State Park. Well not quite, I was replaying his ugly words to me in my sleep, which didn’t make for a great night’s sleep. I got up with Tony and got coffee with him at Panera Bread. We tried to figure out what we should do so we decided to get hooked up at Holland State Park despite the rainy and cold conditions. Tony & I usually make the best of situations and this wasn’t going to be any different. Tony & I enjoyed getting breakfast at a restaurant called Dutch Brothers in Holland and we were looking forward to coming for one of their delicious omelets. Well we missed their breakfast hours so we had lunch instead. We got a campsite at Holland State Park then went for a hike since weather conditions didn’t permit playing in our bathing suits in Lake Michigan. We walked the beach and watched what little activity that was there. The ducks didn’t mind the rainy and cold conditions.

Well during our two-day stay Tony & I hiked and biked all around Holland, MI. The highlights were Black Lake Boardwalk and Mt. Pisgah.

Mt. Pisgah was good to start getting over my ‘Fear of Heights’ issue. It was a workout for me because I was VERY nervous. The bickering session with Tony weakened my mental health but I pressed onward. Visitors to Mt. Pisgah were polite and understanding with my slowness and timid ways of getting around the paths. It was cold and windy but when I got up to the top I was sweating bullets again I pressed onward to see all there was to see. I had a bit of a hiccup trying to get down a nature/wooded path but Tony helped me get down. Tony was terrific getting me back to my comfort level. Once I have a panic attack it is hard to get back to my ‘Ground Zero’ but despite that Tony & I made it back and even enjoyed ourselves. I was glad I went on that hike.

Tony’s Notes
Holland was great; however, I did have some disappointment that we had not been able to spend very many hot summer days on the beaches of Lake Michigan. I was very anxious to head west, but truly did not want to miss out on any good days along the west side of our state. I love the boat towns and fine sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. We had visited so many world class beaches on our southern Caribbean cruise, and had been all over Michigan, Wisconsin, and all of the Great Lakes on our tandem bike and had never found such a great fine sandy coast line as Lake Michigan. We love biking the rails to trails, and playing on the beaches. So, it was hard cutting things short in Holland, but the weather was cold, gloomy, and wet and it was time to head westward. However, as Carolina stated, we did stop at out favorite restaurant, Dutch Brothers. We went for Lunch, but did get to go for breakfast the one morning before we left. The folks that work there remember us from the previous summer; I guess we are a memorable couple. They have some specialty type of breakfasts, and we so enjoy being waited on; we like wining and dining, but always over indulge.

We did go into Saugatuck for a day, and walked around town window shopping. We spent some time tasting Olive Oils, and also did some Wine Tasting. We had some fresh Whitefish by the water, and headed back to Holland.
