Carolina’s Notes
Today was a day to rest from yesterday’s excursion to the Black Hills and Custer State Park. Tony and I did paperwork. I made some notes detailing our journey and he prepped our next destination and finances. We ate cereal in Harry (our RV – 2006 Hurricane); this was special because Tony & I have been eating out much more than our original plan and budget allows. Time passed and before we realized it was afternoon already. Tony fixed a berry smoothie for us; he was trying to use some of the fruit we picked up along the way. Then we decided to utilize the campground pool and hot tub. This was nice but we had unexpected guests in the pool…bugs. These critters flew in because it is an outdoor pool so it is bound to happen. These BIG beetles, bees, etc. were not familiar to this Suburbanite from Detroit so we cut the swimming short. We went into town to do laundry and pick up some groceries because we really need to stop spending SO much money eating out.
Tonight we plan on eating in and packing to venture out back on the road toward Wyoming.
Tony’s Notes
It was actually nice to sit back and relax after all the driving and site seeing the day before. Since August 1st I felt like I had been going non-stop. After leaving on August 27th, we had been having rainy weather following us, visiting family, and then motoring cross country and site seeing. So, it was nice to reflect on the goals of this journey. However, it is quite difficult to not be a vacation. There are so many things to see and you just cannot see them all unless you stay a while in one regional area.
My focus had been to get to the west coast and then slowly head down the Pacific coast. I had concerns about the fall weather coming and did not want to be driving through Rocky Mountains passages with any snow on the ground. It would be one thing with a car, but driving a 35 foot motorhome, and add on a tow bar, car, and bike rack it is a bit different. Overall, I am driving almost fifty feet behind me. Also, being that my motorhome has a gas engine; it does not have quite the same torque as a diesel engine would have.
While we were in the Rapid City area, it was also nice to take a bicycle ride in the city area. We were riding around Canyon Lake Park and it brought back a lot of memories from 1978 and 1979. I had picnicked there often and would go swimming with Brandy. Brandy, my oldest daughter, was only one years old. I use to jump in the water holding her, and slide down the waterfall. Sounds kind of crazy. Now, the water area and waterfall was fenced off with signs that said ‘No Swimming’. I was not surprised.
