November 11th - Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument

Tony’s Notes
We were up before dawn, and threw on clothes, hopped on the 5:15am shuttle, and made it out to Yaki Point to watch sunrise. It was cloudy, and there was a haze across the canyon during sunrise. However, it was enjoyable. We did see, very up close and personal, a Big Horn Sheep. It was grazing right next to us, as if we were not there. We always see more wildlife early in the morning, or at dusk in the evening.

Once we packed up and exited the campground, we drove along the Desert View Road toward the East Entrance/Exit. We had entered through the South Entrance, but wanted to take the East exit in order to go to Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. These were great stops.

We were able to tour through some ancient Indian settlements that were well over 800 years old. We had a great view of Sunset Crater Volcano and the Lava flows in the area.

Once we headed out toward Sedona, we had to drive through downtown Flagstaff to get to highway 89A South. We had a decent into the Oak Creek Canyon that was a little white knuckle driving. However, I had Carolina sit in back with her head phones on and the shades pulled. This made it much easier on me making this spiral decent into the canyon while pulling fifty-three feet of vehicle behind me. The red rocks of the Sedona area are very beautiful. I couldn’t look around too much because the roads were quite narrow and I didn’t want to accidently drive off the edge.

We made it into downtown Sedona with about 45 minutes of daylight. The nearest RV Park according to our booklet was very close, but our GPS said it was 36 miles away. So, I called them and found out that they were close enough to throw a rock and hit us. So, we got hooked up before nightfall and I am a happy camper to have a couple days in Sedona, Arizona.

Carolina’s Notes
We plan on watching sunrise so we have NO time to waste showering. We got up before sunrise and caught the shuttle to Yaki Point. The sunrise wasn’t clear because of clouds cover. Tony took several pictures and they are beautiful despite the clouds. We didn’t spend much time at Yaki Point because we wanted to get to our next destination before nightfall. We arrived back at camp and ate breakfast, packed and hit the road.

We toured the rest of the South Rim of Grand Canyon on our way out of the park. We stopped at Grandview Point and Desert View and I was glad we did. I was still recuperating from my meltdown but I saw views that I’ll never forget. Then it was onward to Sedona, AZ. We planned on making time to tour Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. The stops were enjoyable but I did have some difficulty getting through the pass of Sunset Crater Volcano. I avoided a meltdown but I was unnerved. I still had more miles to keep it together. Anyway we finished the pit stops and we went onward to Sedona, AZ.

Traveling to Sedona, AZ was VERY challenging but I made it…yahoo!! We found accommodations at Rancho Sedona RV Park and boy I was glad to be stopped!! Tony was tempted to go out on the town but I told him that I wasn’t up for it. He fixed cocktails and dinner and we enjoyed the evening. I told Tony that I appreciated him getting me here and that he did a GREAT job driving. I had a fabulous day today!!
