November 13th - Leaving Sedona

Tony’s Notes
Today we had to head south toward Phoenix. I would have liked to explore Sedona a little bit more; however, it was cold at night and raining during the day. I preferred the hot sunny weather down in the Phoenix area.

As we were leaving the Sedona area, we were able to get some really nice snapshots of Sedona Red Rocks at a scenic overlook. We drove through Oak Creek Village making our way to I-17 and South. I was not sure where we would hook up in Phoenix. There were hundreds of RV parks, and many of them accepted the Passport America discount program. However, I found that almost all of them were for people that were 55+ and I am just a couple weeks shy of 49 years old. We had been talking about getting a hotel room for a night to have a chance to do some personal grooming type of things that would be easier in a full sized bathroom versus the motorhome.

So, as we got into Phoenix, we looked through the free travel guide that you pickup at Rest Areas and we found a couple hotels that had discounts. We ended up at a nice clean Days Inn for $50 a night. Considering the RV Park we stayed at in Sedona was $58 per night, the Hotel was cheaper even after taxes. I enjoyed being able to give myself a good haircut and not worry about getting hair all over the motorhome. We had a good travel day, a nice evening, and enjoyed having the amenities. The hotel had plenty of parking, and we were able to park the motorhome and car in an area where I could see it from our third hotel room window.

Carolina’s Notes
I woke up and got showered and dressed right away. I had tasks to accomplish and there was no time to waste. We wound up getting on the road a little later than planned because of a necessary diversion into town. Tony and I found getting around Sedona challenging; stores, restaurants and all businesses are designed to blend into the beautiful landscape. This concept is esthetically pleasing to the eye but murder when you are a visitor trying to find places to park, etc. Once we did what we could we got Harry (RV) and Matt (Malibu) road ready and we were on the road.

On our way out of Sedona, we stopped at a scenic lookout to click some more pictures not taken yesterday because of the Time Share Presentation. I was so glad we stopped because the sun peeked through the clouds to dry some of the precipitation that fell early morning as well as allowed us to sight see and snap really nice pictures. Time waits for no one so we had to get moving.

This travel day was shaping up to be all right through the mountains. I was sitting at the kitchen table, which does help with my nerves through the mountains. I was so much at ease that Tony and I actually carried on a conversation. When we are traveling through mountains I usually want quiet. I was glad that I was at ease. The one task not completed in Sedona still needed accomplishing. We went from US Post Office to US Post Office but the lines were too long and not enough clerks to wait on customers. Tony finally used the self-serve register at the last one. I must say it made me do some philosophical thinking; I wondered if the universe, as I know it, is becoming all self-serve. I started to think about how there is a lack of customer service everywhere. I’ve noticed the customer service void at almost every store, restaurant, etc. that I visited across our journeys. Is it easier to talk to a machine than to a person? Is it just preferred…perhaps? Now there are times when I like the extra attention and other times when I do enjoy the self-checkout registers. I just was surprised that three US Post Offices didn’t have enough clerks considering that the US Unemployment Rate is very high. There must be folks that just might be willing and want a chance to provide Customer Service to me. I just thought that it would have been nice to start my day with a friendly clerk helping me complete my task instead of an open-ended task that took almost all afternoon to complete. I am grateful that the task is done and I am hopeful that the item will arrive intact.

Anyway, we eventually settled in Mesa, AZ near Phoenix at Days Inn. I’ve wanted to take a bath for a couple of weeks and Tony figured this would be a good time to take advantage. The local RV accommodations we investigated didn’t suit. We decided to just get a room and give ourselves some TLC that we’ve been missing aka creature comforts in Sally (house in MI). We finally got to the room after the mail task and dinner to relax and soak in a bath. We enjoyed the night stay and I was grateful that everything worked well.
