November 1st - Desert Hot Springs

Tony’s Notes
The day before, the front office at Golden Shores RV Resort told me we could stay a couple extra days, but we would have to move to a different RV site because the one we were in was reserved. I figured I would do that, but did not think I needed to make the reservation right away. So, when I got up this morning and went to the front office to pay for a couple more days, and get a new site to move to, I did not expect them to tell me they had no availability. I had no intention of leaving this area today.

In fact, I had planned to bike ride the paved trail along the Long Beach waterfront, to check out the area we had only seen at night, the night before. I was so angry to find out we had to leave. I knew Carolina was in no shape to pack up and move on, and I wanted to be in the area, just in case this one recruiter needed me to come up toward the Bay area for an onsite interview.

Anyway, I could have moved to Huntington Beach RV Resort, Newport Dunes RV Resort, or Malibu Beach RV Resort. All those locations would have been anywhere from seventy to ninety dollars per night. After spending $130 on margaritas the night before, I decided I had better get wise and stop living like a man with an income.

Passport America had a member park up near Palm Springs where I could get the fifty percent discount for up to seven days. So, we packed up and left the Pacific Coast, and the Los Angeles area. I was a little sad, and very angry.

By the time we got up into the Santa Anna mountain range, and out into the desert, I was a little concerned at what type of place this would be. The desert seemed barren, and we could see litter and debris. There were also many areas that looked like people were living in shacks or old trailers.

However, when we got to the resort, it was a palm tree paradise. I liked the nine clean pools, all full of one hundred degree hot mineral water. I liked the nicely landscaped and well pruned palm trees. The office was closed on Sunday, but they had individual envelopes for each site that was open. So, we picked one and went and got hooked up.

We had electric, water, sewer, cable, and Wi-Fi. There was also a very nice fitness center, and many other amenities. The Wi-Fi signal was strong, but the connection was very slow. They automatically managed bandwidth, and I would have liked to get over and help them configure their wireless network. I also noticed that we would not have much of a cell phone signal. This would be a perfect location to get ‘off the grid’ and be on a sabbatical. However, from a job search perspective, not so well.

In the evening, while soaking in one of the hot pools, and looking up at the many stars, all I could think was, “it does not get any better than this”.

Carolina’s Notes
I woke up and lingered in bed for a few extra minutes while Tony showered and dressed. I’m not bouncing out of bed because of my fun filled late night. Tony wanted to book us for a couple more days here at Golden Shore RV Resort but they are booked solid. There is NO room at the Inn. We are totally bummed! It totally throws a wrench into our plans. The other places Tony called are way out of our price range or not able to suit our needs. I have to get ready and packed in a hurry. I’m hoping this travel day will be ok.

Traveling from Long Beach to Palm Springs area was short but tough. I was NOT prepared to travel the mountains. The constant up and down and side-to-side was hard. Despite my discomfort, I do try to look out the windows to view the gorgeous views. I figure if I’m going through the journey I better take in some of the views. I was grateful the journey was short.

We arrived at Sky Valley Resort in Sky Valley, CA. We are close to Palm Springs and more people are familiar with Palm Springs than Sky Valley. Sky Valley Resort is a GREAT spot. I hope we are able to stay for a week. We’ll be technology challenged for a while but Panera Bread will be on our morning routine to keep communications. We got settled and relaxed for a bit before enjoying a mineral spring soak. The resort has total of nine pools and hot tubs. It really is a nice, clean and well-maintained resort. I am glad to be here; I hope we can stay a week. We got home from soaking and I watched the World Series and Tony went on an errand into town. Our phones weren’t working so it was hard to navigate in a strange town but Tony got home safe. We relaxed at home until it was time for bed. We had a nice day.
