November 5th - Joshua Tree National Park

Carolina’s Notes
We woke up early and decided to get some more calking done on the RV. Tony got right to work. I brushed my teeth and hair then got to helping. Tony and I worked at calking almost three hours. Then Tony called it quits. I suggested going to Joshua Tree National Park today. He was game so we threw on sunscreen and shorts and packed a lunch and we were moving.

We had a marvelous time visiting Joshua Tree National Park. We hiked Hidden Valley and Cholla Cactus Garden. We drove to Keys View and witnessed spectacular views of the various mountain ranges and valleys. All of the National Parks are terrific but I was the most comfortable in Joshua Tree National Park. We climbed tall mountains without the drop offs. It was much easier traveling and visiting this wonderful desert. This park is more than a desert upon closer examination we found fascinating varieties of plants, animals, and geological features that took a person’s breathe away. I am SO thankful that it is preserved as one of our National Parks. I recommend the journey to someone who is in the area whether he or she resides here or just vacationing. Please keep in mind that it is November so I’m sure the temperature is much different depending on the time of year the park is visited. Never the less, I am so thrilled that we made a point to journey to Joshua Tree National Park.

We arrived home in the dark and Tony fixed dinner and a cocktail. The plan is to soak in the hot tub before retiring to bed. I need to catch up on some computer work so I can relax knowing my duties have been fulfilled. I am so lucky that I have been able to see all the wonders my country has. I see places in movies that I have visited and boy it makes a difference. I love Michigan but being able to experience other climates of weather and people have broadened my views and opinions. I am fascinated with how people can live and survive in such brutal environments such as deserts, prairies, etc. I have seen how fortunate I am and have been. I am a true city girl and just driving from destination to destination is challenging but to actually live and work the land is an entity all of its own. Anyway, I have a deeper appreciation of the climates that I have witnessed and I am MOST grateful to have had the experience.

Tony’s Notes
I was calking this morning starting at 7:30am. By 10am, it was time to do something else. Calking was a big chore, and trying to do it all in one day would make me get sloppy. I needed to take my time; although, I really did not want to calk every day, either.

I was glad Carolina suggested we go to Joshua Tree National Park. Our original plans were to go first thing on Friday. However, going today worked out much better.

Joshua Tree National Park was an amazing place. It truly was spectacular. We came upon a point where two deserts meet; the Mojave and the Colorado. On one part you had a forest of Joshua Trees, and then it transition to Cholla Cactus. As Carolina pointed out, the Mountain View, Keys View, you could see several mountain ranges, including Signal Mountain ninety miles away, in Mexico. You could see Banning Pass, where the smog from L.A. funneled into the valley. The smog did create a haze that obstructed some of the view of the Coachella valley where Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and many other cities lie.
