October 30th - Venice Beach

Carolina’s Notes
I got ready and took a little more time completing some extra grooming. We ate breakfast and did some computer work then got on with our day of sight seeing.

We made our way to Venice Beach. We found a place to park and got on the tandem bicycle and rode the path for about ten miles. This metropolis is unlike anything I’ve ever seen and some things I could have left to my imagination. That’s all I’m going to say about that. Tony and I turned and headed back to the car once the scenery changed. In our opinion, the sights became less beautiful. We are traveling to see beauty not things we can see at home. On the way back, we stopped and visited the boardwalk. We locked up the tandem and walked the boardwalk and soaked in the atmosphere. There was a Mexican restaurant at the end of the boardwalk. We decided to eat because Tony was ready. My stomach was acting up again today and I wasn’t so hungry but I didn’t want Tony to suffer because of me. We ordered appetizers and a margarita. We enjoyed the surroundings and the activity plus the sun shining helped. I was SO glad we stopped because I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Daylight was fading and I didn’t want to drive home in the dark. We didn’t linger on the boardwalk long. We still wanted to put our feet in the sand and sit on the beach. We actually watched part of the sunset then left. I thoroughly enjoyed our day!

It took quite a long time to get home. There certainly is a lot of traffic in California much more than in Detroit. When we arrived home I wanted to relax and catch up on journalizing. Tony went for a soak in the hot tub while I finished my computer work. The rest of the night we flaked out then went to bed. We had a nice day!

Tony’s Notes
Our hookup at the RV resort in Long Beach was a very beautiful site. I wasn’t sure if we should take a train into Hollywood or bike ride Venice Beach. We opted to bike ride, and I am glad we did. I thought it was a very beautiful place. We started from one side of Venice beach. Venice beach has a paved bicycle trail through the sandy beach, it is the one you always see in the movies with some bikini hot babe rollerblading or something like that. Although it was a hot sunny day, there was no bikini girls' out rollerblading. They might have been up near the water sunbathing.

Anyway, we went for quite a ways down the twenty-six mile path. As we passed muscle beach area, I saw some young athletic guys swinging from large rings on long chains. They were something like monkey bars but for adults. It looked pretty cool and I wanted to see if I could do it in my fat old man body. So, I got off our bike and walked over to the guys and gals and asked if I could try. One guy said sure, but to take off the bicycle gloves on my hands and to chalk up my hands with his chalk or I would get bad blisters.

I did what he said and while hanging from the first ring, I could not get swinging enough to get to the second ring. I jumped off and was about to walk away, but some girl said to take a run up to the first ring; the other guy said to also get the first ring swing a little. After doing what they said, I swung from ring to ring like a pro; in my egotistical opinion. I was quite proud of myself being able to swing from one end to the other after seeing many young teenage or early twenty something’s NOT make it from one end to the other. Although, my dismount from the last ring was not very graceful; I planted my face in the sand. But what the hell; it was cool.

Anyway, as we moved on, we came to Santa Monica Beach. They had amusement park type rides, and a boardwalk. However, we kept going for a while until the path curved closer to the road. We turned around and started back, and stopped at the boardwalk. I enjoyed the margarita and appetizers. However, I am tired of finding out after the fact that the margaritas are fifteen dollars each. California is an expensive place when you eat at places with great views.

I thought the culture and views at Venice Beach were very cool and interesting. I think Carolina was a bit taken back when we rode past the kid sitting on a blanket, lighting his crack pipe; we could have done without that.

It took a long time to get back home driving down the Pacific Coast Highway. It was Devils Night and dark; I know Carolina was worried. Luckily, we found out that L.A. does not know anything about Devils Night, like folks in Detroit.

Anyway, we had a fun day, and plan to go see my aunt and cousins tomorrow.
