October 12th - Off to Crater Lake National Park

Carolina’s Notes
We got up and threw on clothes, brushed our teeth and combed our hair. We skipped showers so we could get a head start to Crater Lake. Tony packed up and hooked up the tow to Matt Malibu and then we were off. We both wanted to go back to the Pancake Mill. We ate breakfast then got on the road. The breakfast wasn’t as good as when we stopped the other day. Anyway, we were fed and it was time to drive. I decided to fly solo without any Dramamine or wristbands. I faired pretty well. There were parts of the ride that rattled my nerves pretty good but no panic attack. I am pleased. Tony and I again fought daylight to get to Crater Lake National Park. We got to Crater Lake and the Visitor Center was closed so we went onward to Rim Village; we came across Rim Village’s RV Parking Lot and bunked for the night. Please keep in mind that we weren’t quite legally parked. We were trying to find the campground and no one was open to help us. As it turned out, another visitor with an RV also stayed with us. We all figured that if a Park Ranger comes then we’d tell him that it was dangerous to travel in the dark. This place is wicked dark because there aren’t any streetlights. So for now that’s what we are going to do. I’ll let you know how it turns out later. Well, no ranger came so we decided to get comfortable. Shall I say as comfortable as possible because it began to snow. Tony figured the snowfall should/ would be a dusting. I left this weather and situation up to faith and decided to change into my nightgown. I needed to relax so I made a decision to focus my mind into my home on wheels. We put in a DVD, popped popcorn, ate ice cream cones then went to bed. Whether or not we would actually get any rest was still the question. Never the less, Tony & I needed to get to bed even just to lie down and close our eyes. I said my prayers and closed my eyes.

Tony’s Notes
It was an interesting end to the day. The journey to Crater Lake was pretty. We drove through more picturesque scenic byways and national forests to get there. There was an RV Park in a town called Prospect, but it would have been a forty mile drive to Crater Lake. I thought there was a campground up near the rim of Crater Lake National Park, so we made our way to the rim. It was cold, and dusk was coming quick. It was cloudy, but we could see the lake. I took a couple pictures with my cell phone because I figured that we would drive the rim in the morning and get good pictures with the camera.

I feared driving down the mountain in the dark. The roads painted lines had faded, and would not be visible. The roads were very narrow with major drop-offs. So, I figured we should just stay put in the parking lot at Rim Village. While watching a movie on the DVD player, a knock on the door came and it was a fellow motorhomer that wanted to know if we were staying. I told him yes because I wanted to drive down in the daylight the next morning. He figured they would sleep up there too. I was actually glad we were not the only ones up there.

It was very dark, like Carolina said in her notes. We slept, but I could hear what sounded like snow hitting the motorhome. I figured it was a dusting; after all it was only October 12th. Of course, we were at an over 8,000 foot elevation.

Anyway, when I got up at 5:30am and stepped outside, it was a whiteout and there was over a foot of snow. The tow car was covered. I thought to myself, “Damn, should have driven down in the dark”.
