September 12th - Arrival in Cody, Wyoming

Carolina’s Notes
We are off to Cody, WY to hook up for one week and tour the national parks. The drive was picturesque as one might expect. We were traveling along then in Buffalo, WY we came upon construction. I cannot seem to get away from construction no matter how hard I try. Construction on my commute to work was one of my continual gripes about my desk job. Again, life happens no matter where you go to get away. We drove through Big Horn National Forest and that was breath taking. At this point I was sitting at the kitchen table with the Day Shades drawn down to block some of the steep overlooks. We would stop from time to time and I would get out and experience some of these beautiful sights outside of Harry. One we stopped at was ‘Loaf Mountain Overlook.’ I was armed with one pill of Dramamine and the wristbands. This has been helpful at keeping my fears under control. I enjoyed yesterday’s adventures very much. Once we hit the town of Ten Sleep, WY we needed to stop so we ate and drank at Ten Sleep Saloon. This saloon was your stereotypical Western bar. We ate and left because Tony didn’t want to travel at night today. We noticed the saloon still wasn’t as good as ‘Little Tony’s’, our favorite watering hole in MI.

We ventured onward toward Cody, WY and arrived at 5:30 pm (Mountain Time). We are here at Cody KOA Campground until September 18, 2009. During our stay we plan on visiting Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park. Well, we got Harry hooked up; we cleaned up, and went into downtown Cody. We wound up eating at Zapata’s Mexican Restaurant, which was delicious. We had tried getting served at two other restaurants but they either paid us no mind, Proud Cut Saloon & Restaurant and Wyoming Rib & Chops. Now to be fair Wyoming Rib & Chops did put us on a waiting list but even when we came back to check on our status their hostess couldn’t have cared less if we ate at their place. I can tell you from experience that this type of customer service does NOT keep people coming back. I don’t have the resources to utilize on establishments that do not realize that is their customers that keep their doors open especially in the food business because there is always another place to eat. All was well in the end. We had an enjoyable evening then came home to Harry, sat out and star gazed, watched a movie to let food digest and then went to bed.

Tony’s Notes
The scenic byways through Big Horn National Forest were incredible. Making our way through the mountain passes and switchbacks was quite a new experience. We stopped quite often along the way to get out and take snap shot photos. I almost made a slight change in direction to stop in a town called, Thermopolis. They had natural Hot Springs and public bathhouses; they are also known for their dinosaur museums. I stuck to the plan, and figured that if time allowed, we would head to Thermopolis another day.

The Cody KOA seemed nice, and I had enough driving for the day. I figured that Cody was a good gateway city near Yellowstone. I would have liked to have camped at ‘Fishing Bridge RV’, the RV Park inside Yellowstone National Park. I know that Carolina was not comfortable driving the RV through Yellowstone to get there, and it would have been $38 a night, if they had a site for us. I was fine with the KOA, and we had mountain views, and were close to the town of Cody.
