October 2nd - Olympic National Park

Carolina’s Notes
Despite ending yesterday on a sour note, we got up and showered to get out to Olympic National Park. We were both glad we did. We visited Ruby Beach and Hoh Rain Forest. We also stopped at the look out points along the way. We got a later start than what we hoped so we didn’t get to all the points Tony wanted to visit. Tony had a two-hour drive just to get to Hoh Rain Forest. On the way home I asked him if he wanted to come back to sight see around Quinault Rain Forest and float on Lake Quinault. Tony declined and said he needed a break from driving and wanted tomorrow to be a laundry and chore day. He was a good sport considering we only saw two of the five sights he was looking to experience. He remarked that he can’t expect to see everything. I informed Tony of my willingness to help if I could be but he was resolved not drive back tomorrow.

We got back to home base and freshened up. Tony wanted to go out for seafood. One of the Seattle natives told Tony of a restaurant called Alec’s Restaurant. We had a great time! We got back to Harry let our food digest while we watched TV then bed.

As I reflect on the time at Olympic National Park, the rain forest was spectacular! I visited one when I was in the Virgin Islands years ago but this has a magic all onto its own. I was glad that I was able to visit Hoh Rain Forest. It was definitely time well spent. The air in the Hoh Rain Forest is so crisp and clean. I felt as if I had discovered the fountain of youth. I had a little hiccup with my height issue while hiking the Moss Path but Tony lent me his hand and together we hiked the path and enjoyed our experience. The ride home I reflected on the cleanliness of the air and the magical rhythm of the rain forest. My mere words cannot describe that particular rhythm. I hope the pictures we took can give a little more into that world.

Tony’s Notes
Ruby Beach was quite spectacular. The rain forest was just out of this world amazing. Carolina and I had hiked through the tropical rain forest in the Caribbean back in 2001, while we were on a southern Caribbean cruise. However, this hike through the Hoh rain forest was a temperate rain forest, and very different. When I look at the collective photos that we took on this day, it is an amazing area. The photos look bright, but the area is covered with a canopy formed by the tops of the trees. The area maintains the same temperature all twelve months of the year.

We did way too much driving. I had hoped to drive up to Port Angeles and hike out to the hot springs, or take the ferry over to Vancouver Island. I know I will visit this area again one day.

We went to eat at Alec’s. We both had a stuffed Halibut because Halibut is in season here. We split a bottle of Chardonnay and enjoyed the fresh seafood. Great day.
