September 11th - Devil's Tower

Carolina’s Notes
Well, we traveled through the rest of South Dakota into Wyoming and went to Devil’s Tower. The journey was the easiest travel time yet. I was pleasantly surprised because I was really uptight about Devil’s Tower in my mind. We walked the Tower Trail and it was a little over a mile. It was beautiful. It was getting to be dark so we had to quickly tour the Tower Trail. We were hoping to bunk down at the Devil’s Tower KOA but the registration had closed and the sign was clear NO unregistered guests. So we left and traveled back to I-90 and found Gillette, WY. Flying J had a local in Gillette where Tony & I bunked. We ate at the Applebee’s because the Flying J’s wait staff paid us no mind. Tony & I were hungry and ready for a cocktail so it was a better choice. Yes, Applebee’s NOT on our clean eating plan but at 10:30 pm (EST); it was not the time to be cooking on the stove. I fell asleep the minute my head hit the pillow.

Next morning we are off to Cody, WY to hook up for one week and tour the national parks.

Tony’s Notes
Yep, we had a fairly easy drive through South Dakota and into Wyoming. Although it was already late afternoon, I had to go to Devil’s Tower. After all, it was where the aliens came to pickup Richard Dreyfuss in the 1979 movie, “Close Encounters of a Third Kind”. As we got off of I90 and headed up the short drive to Devil’s Tower, the area and scenery was beautiful, and you could see Devil’s Tower in the distance. Carolina outlines it well in her notes; we hiked around Devil’s Tower on the one and a half mile trail. I was amazed at the ‘rock’ climbers. They scaled the face of this tower. It was dusk, and I had made the assumption that they would sleep in a sleeping bag hanging on the side of the mountain. However, I was informed that it was against the law to sleep up there. They had to be off the towering rock by nightfall.

The KOA campground that Carolina mentions sits practically at the base of the tower. So, when I pulled in there and looked at the view I would have had, had we hooked up and camped there it would have been an awesome thing to have done. However, I wasn’t comfortable with the glaring sign that stated un-registered guests would be prosecuted.

Furthermore, sleeping in the parking lot of a Flying J, a truck stop, was a lot cheaper. Gillette, Wyoming was just an overnight place to sleep, and we really were sitting right along the I90 exit ramp, so it was loud and dirty.
