October 9th

Carolina’s Notes
We got up and Tony and I got ready to leave. This RV Park wasn’t able to accommodate us for more days. We decided to hook up at Sunset Bay State Park. The weather was beautiful but Tony and I we feeling ill from the previous nights outings. We did manage to get out and enjoy the weather and the some of the sights in the late afternoon hours. We visited Shore Acres State Park, an Observation Shelter (for whale watching) and Botanical Gardens. Shore Acres State Park was formally an estate of a wealthy man by the name of Louis J. Simpson. In a nutshell, Mr. Simpson lost his fortune in the Depression. His property/mansion was purchased by the state of Oregon for use as a public park. Not that I wish misfortune onto anyone but it was from Mr. Simpson’s misfortune that gave many others joy and pleasure. You might say that he gave back even in his demise. I am grateful to have had a chance to witness these grounds. After our sight seeing adventures, we made it back to camp. We hung out at home and enjoyed dinner, a campfire then a DVD. We turned into bed at a descent hour in a relaxed manner. I for one was grateful because Tony & I have been bickering way too much for being away on sabbatical. I am puzzled as to why my husband and I are at odds way too often. I cannot solve this today but for now I’m grateful for peace.

Tony’s Notes
We had decided to stay in the Coos Bay area a couple extra days. However, when I asked to stay at the RV Park, they told me the sites were already reserved for the weekend. So, we found a full hook up spot at Sunset Bay State Park. This turned out to be a fantastic move. It was $16 dollars per night, and we were actually camping, instead of hooked up at an RV Park. The site was very secluded, and we had deer at our site grazing. We could have a camp fire, and sit and star gaze. This was not like sitting in the woods in Michigan. This was a forest with mature pines that were a few hundred years old. The bays and beaches were all in hiking distance, and I was very happy to be hooked up at this location.

Shore Acres State Park was a perfect spot to watch the seals and sea lions. Never got to see any whales, but I did stare off into the ocean view and watch the curvature of the Earth. This was what I set out to do on a sabbatical; to sit and think about life, and how great it really is to be living and healthy. The Botanical gardens were very nice. Also, Sunset Bay definitely demanded that we sit and watch a sunset there to understand how it got its name.
