October 6th - Sauvie Island near Portland, OR

Carolina’s Notes
We got up and Tony showered and I wanted to catch up on journalizing and emails before I took my shower. Our plan is to bike ride Sauvie Island. This park was just outside of Portland. It was a hard ride because we took a wrong turn, which took us off coarse about ten miles. As far as Portland being bike rider friendly leaves something to be desired. There were no signs indicating where points of interest were on the island. The leave it to the imagination approach was not amusing to bike riders from Michigan. If we would have had a map it may have turned out differently but I’m skeptical due to the lack of signs on Sauvie Island. This ride took us all day to complete. On the way home in the dark, we stopped at a BBQ restaurant. Then we got home and settled down for bed. All in all we were glad that we had a chance to get some exercise.

Tony’s Notes
We had not known of too many places to go in Portland. We probably should have had some fun in downtown Portland, and such. However, we had decided to do this 12.5 bicycle ride around Sauvie Island. Our GPS on the cell phone got us there just fine. We drove through the city and the maze of highways and got there. I met some other bike riders, and they said it was pretty straight forward. However, we road along the island, and it seemed to go on for many more miles than a 12.5 mile circle around it.

We eventually came to a road that started to get rough and full of gravel. It was a sunny warm day, but the hours had gone by and I had concerns about getting stuck out somewhere remote in the dark. We came upon an area that was full of cars parked along the gravel road, and I saw a sign that said “Clothing Optional Beach”. In the distance there were a bunch of young and old naked people sitting on the beach. Having no swimsuit, I was quite tempted. I had never walked around naked in public before. Being that I was afraid of losing daylight, I chose to keep bicycle riding instead. I finally asked someone driving by if we were on the right road. Come to find out, we had missed our turn a little over six miles back.

So, we had to double back the way we came. It ended up being a twenty five mile bike ride. Being that we were out of shape, it was difficult. Back in 2003 and 2004, we were doing twenty to thirty miles per day, after work. Anyway, it was a challenging bike ride, and we finished as the Sun was setting. I was able to stop along the way and take a few snapshots along the Columbia River; no pictures from the clothing optional beach though….
